LITERACY EDUCATION INFORMATION SYSTEM
PROCEDURES
The Literacy Education Information System (LEIS)
was designed, developed and constructed for a variety of needs. These
include:
§
A need to report
on the effectiveness of literacy programs in the areas of recruitment,
assessment, retention, and evaluation based on student outcomes.
§
A need to
provide data to support decision making, that impacts the educational
environment and delivery of services based on the needs and
enrollment behavior of students.
§
A need to
collect accurate, up-to-date, detailed, and consistent data for analysis
and reporting purposes.
An LEIS form must be completed on all students
participating in any of the seven Basic Skills programs: Adult Basic
Education (ABE), Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE), Adult High School
(AHS), General Educational Development (GED), Compensatory Education (CED),
English as a Second Language (ESL), Family (FAM)
and Workplace Literacy (WPL), in addition to Orientation. Upon
entering literacy programs, students are interviewed to determine their
functional levels, goals, and educational background. Data is
collected to assist the college in understanding students’ needs. LEIS
forms must be obtained from the appropriate coordinator of each Basic
Skills section as indicated. For filing purposes and swift access
during auditing, these forms are color-coded as: ABE/ABLE/GED (blue),
AHS (yellow), ESL (purple), WPL (salmon), FAM (Pink), Orientation (white),
and CED (green).
The LEIS data is used to deliver individualized
instruction, to support retention activities, to evaluate
recruitment/marketing efforts, to assist in the assessment of educational
gains, and to provide information.
The LEIS system permits the retrieval and
analysis of data for decision making, determining additional technical
assistance needs, and for adapting and developing programs to meet the
needs and goals of students. It allows assessment information to be
collected and recorded regularly to measure program effectiveness.
