EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOLS
Small, autonomous schools where students earn an associate degree or two
years of college credit. For more information,

EFL (see English as a Foreign Language)
ELEARNING
An umbrella term that includes all the ways the College offers courses for
students at a distance including telecourses, television, and Internet.
Organized instruction delivery by means other than face-to-face
classroom contact. See
eLearning.
ELECTIVE
COURSE
A course that the student may choose to take to meet diploma/degree
requirements, as distinguished from required courses. Some electives are
specified within areas, such as Technical Electives, Humanities/Art
Electives; others are Free Electives.
ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Academic English classes that help students learn English, reading, writing,
grammar, and listening/speaking skills to prepare them to pursue a degree at
the college level or for a professional career. Preferred term is Academic
English as a Second Language.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
English as a Second Language is a general term covering both Academic English
as a Second Language and Adult English as a Second Language (see LEP).
Academic English as a Second Language prepares non-native speakers of English
to function successfully in institutions of higher education and professional
settings in the United States.

EXCEL
Excel is a spreadsheet
creation and editing application produced by Microsoft. It is commonly
included as a standard in the MS Office suite of applications and will be
found in-use throughout CPCC's web sites and online offerings. A
free "viewer" plug-in that allows users to view Excel spreadsheets
without having the software installed on their system is available through
the downloads area of the Microsoft web site.
EXEMPT EMPLOYEE
Employee who is exempt from federal laws (FLSA) that prevent an employee from working more than 40
hours a week without additional compensation.
