GARINGER HALL (former name of Central High)
The old Charlotte Central High School building renamed in 1978 for Dr. Elmer Garinger, former
superintendent of Charlotte City Schools and an early supporter of community
colleges. Renamed Central High in 2002.
GED
General Educational Development program offers an option for students who
have not completed high school and leads to a high school equivalency diploma
issued by the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges.
GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES
These courses, required in all degree programs, ensure that
graduates have the necessary general knowledge, abilities, and
intellectual skills commensurate with their degrees.
GENERAL LEDGER
A formal ledger containing all the financial statement accounts of
the business. It contains offsetting debit and credit accounts, the
totals of which are proved by a trial balance. As it pertains to CPCC,
the General Ledger is a component of Colleague by Datatel. Alternate
terms are GL and sometimes "The (organization's) books."
GILES BUILDING
Central Campus Science building named for Lucille Giles, a college
benefactor.
GOAL
A statement of a quantifiable desired future state or condition (broad and vague).
GRADUATION CHECK
An audit conducted by the Graduation Office to certify that students have
completed all required credits in a declared program of study.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE
The total number of grade points earned (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) divided by
the total number of semester hours attempted.
GRANTS
Special terminology is used in the preparation and description of grant
proposals. CPCC's Government Relations and Grants Office has published
a dictionary of commonly used terms.
