SACS
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is one of six private,
nonprofit, voluntary regional accrediting associations. CPCC is
accredited by the Commission on Colleges of this association.
SCANS
The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills defined five
competencies and tree-part foundation of skills and personal qualities that
lie at the heard of job performance.
SBC
Small Business Center was reconstituted as the
Institute for Entrepreneurship.
SCHEDULE
Short for the Class Schedule, a listing of classes and services offered by
the College. The schedule is published prior to the beginning of a new
semester and is inserted in the Charlotte Observer. It is also
available at all campuses.
SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENT
Also called DROP/ADD; a period during registration when students may change
their class schedules without penalty.
SEANC
The State of Employees Association of North
Carolina.
SEAT TIME
The actual number of contact hours of a class.
SELF-SUPPORTING
Courses not reimbursed by state funding but supported solely by student
tuition.
SEMESTER HOUR CREDITS (SHC):

hour of credit.

SERVICE-LEARNING
A
teaching method that combines community service with classroom instruction.
CPCC has a Service-Learning
Center on Central Campus.
SERVICES CORPORATION
CPCC Services
Corporation exists to support CPCC, through the development of
entrepreneurial products and services, in its commitment to advancing the
life-long educational development of adults. Projects include the Center for
Applied Research, Crossroads Cafe, the Harris Conference Center, CPCC Press,
Career Transition Services, the Center for Business Success.
SHOCKWAVE
Though less commonly
found than Flash, Adobe Shockwave is sometimes used to develop dynamic and
interactive content for media, courses, and web sites. Viewing Shockwave
content may require students to install the
free "Shockwave Player"
plug-in.
SHORT SESSION
A schedule for a class that is shorter than a 16 week semester. Many
classes are divided into two 8-week sessions, called First and Second Short
Sessions.
SHORT-TERM TRAINING CERTIFICATE
Short-term training
certificates may be earned in noncredit programs (Corporate and Continuing
Education). A short-term certificate program can range from one course to
several courses. The certificate program will provide skills for entry-level
job opportunities and, in addition, a career ladder for advancement once
employed. Short-term training certificates are issued by CCE and are not
noted on a student's transcript. A student cannot receive financial aid while
studying for these certificates.
SITE
The location of a file on the Internet.
SGA
Student Government Association. The president of SGA is a non-voting
member of the College Board of Trustees.
SLOAN-MORGAN BUILDING
Sloan-Morgan is a classroom and office building on Central Campus named for two
former chairs of the Board of Trustees, Albert "Pete" Sloan and George
Morgan. The Bryant Recital Hall, named for Gene Bryant, is on the first
floor near the Elizabeth Ave. entrance
SMART CLASSROOM
A specifically equipped room to enable faculty and staff to deliver
multi-media rich presentations. These rooms are capable of presenting
PowerPoint slides, CD-ROM, DVD multimedia, and standard VHS media. They
may also be used to project an image from a workstation or laptop.
SNAIL MAIL
Mail delivered by the post office, in contrast to e-mail.
SNAP ACCOUNT
The single network access pass
(SNAP) account established by the College for each registered student. Using
the unique SNAP login, a student may access email and other secure online
services supplied by the College for each student. See
MYCPCC.
SOFTWARE
Coded instructions that tell computer hardware what operations to
perform. Also called programs or applications.
SOMMERS BUILDING
One of the buildings in the administration complex on East Fourth Street.
Address is 1322 E. Fourth Street. Named for James Sommers, former president of
the CPCC Foundation Board of Directors.
SPRING BREAK
A short break in mid-spring semester when the College is open but classes are
suspended and ten-month faculty and students have a vacation.
STANDARDS OF PROGRESS
Guidelines that are part of CPCC’s Grading Policy and include
requirements for students in degree, diploma, and certificate programs
to maintain good academic standing. These standards include completion
of courses, minimum program GPA, and minimum semester GPA. When students
do not meet these standards, they are placed on Academic Intervention,
or Academic Suspension and they work more closely with their faculty
advisor or program counselor in order to reach their educational goals.

SWAT TEAM
A task force focusing on short-term and long-term ways to increase
enrollment.
SWIM TEAM
Southwest Instructional Managers are coordinators, directors, associate
deans, and dean of Harper Campus.
SPARK
The name of the College student newspaper.
STUDENT PORTAL
The computer program that enables students to access email and other
online services requiring authentication using a unique login. At CPCC the
login is called the single network access pass (SNAP) account and the portal
is called
MYCPCC.
