LAB FEE
An additional charge for some classes that have labs as part of the course
structure. Lab fees are used in the division to purchase supplies and
equipment for the lab in which fees are applied.
LAPSED SALARY
The budgeted salary of an employee who leaves the College before the end of
the fiscal year. Lapsed salaries may be used to hire a replacement or
for a new position.
LEAGUE FOR INNOVATION IN THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
A prestigious consortium of selected two-year colleges
across the United
States that promotes innovation in teaching and learning. Colleges must
be invited to join the League and membership is limited.
LEARN AND EARN
A new
format for high schools, most of which are located on community college
campuses. They offer the opportunity for graduates to leave after five years
with not only a high school diploma but also with either a college transfer
associate degree or two years of transferable college credit. Early college
high schools and middle college high schools are part of this initiative.
LEARNERWEB
LearnerWeb is a centralized database which provides a systematic process for scheduling, advertising, and tracking professional development activity. It allows employees to access the wide variety of professional development offerings, and to review their training histories. It is also a useful tool for managers who wish to see the development activities of their direct reports.
LEARNING COMMUNITIES
Learning communities provide integrated learning experiences for students
through blocked or linked classes. The courses are designed around a
unifying theme and are from different disciplines, sharing the same group of
students. Classes are scheduled back to back in a time block, and
instructors meet weekly to discuss student progress and to plan course
activities. Special permission is required to register.
LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Computer software used by faculty in support of online courses.
Currently, the college maintains two:
Moodle, an open source software system, and
Blackboard (Bb). For

LEARNING UNIT
Designation for the unit of the College formerly called the Instruction
Unit. The VP for Learning heads the unit.
LEGACY PLAZA
is the park-like area between the Overcash Academic and Performing Arts Center and
Kings Drive on Central Campus. The Aspire bronze sculpture is the focal point
of the plaza.
LEP
Limited English Proficiency courses are part of the Adult English as a Second
Language program that provides English language instruction to international
adults who are immigrants or refugees. Courses are designed at
beginning and intermediate levels to emphasize language skills in social and
work settings. Preferred term is Adult ESL.
LIBRARY DATABASES
Library subscriptions to full-text magazine/newspaper/journal articles and
e-books that are accessed through the Internet via the Library
homepage. These databases may be accessed anywhere on any CPCC campus
or with user name and password, from home or remote locations.
LIBRARY RESOURCES
The total accumulation of materials (print and nonprint) that are available
for use by patrons of the library. These include book, periodicals,
audiovisuals, and electronic resources that are available in the library
itself or virtually.
LIFELONG
Preferred spelling of the adjective, not life-long.

LOAD UNIT
A unit of measurement to determine an instructor's teaching load.
Lecture class per week 1 hour=1 load unit; lab per week 1 hour=.75 load unit;
clinic per week 1 hour=.63 load unit, co-op per week 1 hour=.60 load unit
LOT
Learning Outcomes Team consists of a team of 10 individual charged with the
College's participation in the League for Innovation project called 21st
Century Learning Outcomes. The team will define core competencies and
learning outcomes needed for the 21st century, develop curriculum, deliver
models, document student achievement, and disseminate model programs and
practices to other institutions. Each participating college is paired
with another college. CPCC is paired with Midlands Tech, S.C.
LRC
The Learning Resources Center on Central Campus is named for Dr. Richard
Hagemeyer, first president of CPCC. The LRC houses the library, faculty
offices, Instructional Development and Innovation, CPCC TV and Media
Services.
