| 4.12 Work Loads
for Exempt Personnel |
| |
|
|
|
A. Full-time Teaching Faculty
|
| |
|
1. Overall Load Responsibilities |
 |
a. Each full-time teaching faculty member has responsibilities to serve
students, the division and the College by providing instruction,
assisting students, and engaging in professional growth/service and
college/community service. These duties are described in the job
description for full-time instructors. The instructor shall regularly
report these activities to the division director, according to a
mutually agreeable process. |
 |
b. The College expects instructors to make a full-time professional
commitment to Central Piedmont Community College. Accordingly,
instructors will spend a minimum of thirty hours each week at an
assigned teaching site or in direct service to the College and its
students. |
 |
c. Corporate and Continuing Education instructors will
spend a minimum of forty hours each week at an assigned teaching site or
in direct service to the College and its students. |
|
2. Instructional Responsibilities |
 |
a. Each teaching faculty member will be assigned a teaching load
according to the length of contract and the types of courses taught. The
division director will assign schedules equitably to each member within
the department. Schedules should be based on the needs of students and
should take into account such factors as the size of the class, the
number of different preparations, the difficulty of the teaching
assignment, the locations of the classes, the qualifications and
preferences of the instructor, the needs of the division, the type of
evaluations required of students, and other appropriate considerations. |
 |
b. Individual teaching schedules may be adjusted upward or downward from
one term to another to accommodate variations in enrollments and to meet
other needs such as approved college/division projects requiring
responsibility equivalent to teaching a class or classes. |
 |
c. The division director is responsible for monitoring the equity in
teaching assignments within the division throughout the year and for
reporting teaching schedules each semester to the appropriate Dean for
approval. |
 |
d. Standard Teaching Load for Curriculum Faculty |
|
The standard teaching load for curriculum faculty is 36 load units per year for a 10-month
contract. |
|
e. The Calculation of the Curriculum Faculty Teaching Load |
|
Each term, the teaching load will be based upon load units calculated as
follows: |
|
Lecture/Lab per week (1 hour = 1 load unit)
Lecture classes with 50 students or fewer (1 hour = 1 load unit)
Lecture classes with 51 students or more (1 hour = 1.5 load units)
Clinical Instruction (1 hour = 1 load unit)
Clinical Supervision (1-8 clinical slots = 1 load unit), (9-16 clinical
slots = 2 load units), (17 or more clinical slots = 3 load units)
Co-op per number of
students (1 student =
.60 load unit; maximum of 10 students per
class) |
 |
At the beginning
of spring semester, the College will compensate faculty for
any load units accumulated in excess of the standard load. |
 |
f. Standard Teaching Load for Literacy
Faculty |
 |
The standard teaching load for regular classroom literacy faculty on
a 10-month contract who are teaching a traditional
class is 26-29 contact hours per week; the standard
workload for literacy lab instructors on a 10-month contract is
30-36 contact hours per week in the laboratory with students. |
 |
g. Standard Teaching Load for Corporate and Continuing Education
Faculty |
 |
The standard teaching load for Corporate and Continuing Education
faculty is 24-32 contact hours per week. Corporate and Continuing
Education work loads will be averaged on an annual basis. |
|
Division directors may assign work loads that mix
curriculum, literacy, and Corporate and Continuing Education
instruction. Classes will be equated according to the following
definitions and formulas: |
|
Type A Literacy/Continuing Education Class = 1.50
curriculum load units |
|
In Type A classes, the instructor conducts needs
assessment, develops customized course materials, meets with possible
clients and teaches the class. |
|
Type B Literacy/Continuing Education Class = 1.25
curriculum load units |
|
In Type B classes, the instructor develops a course
based on existing units, updates materials to meet client needs, meets
clients, and teaches the class. |
|
Type C Literacy/Continuing Education Class =
.75 curriculum load units |
|
In Type C classes, the instructor teaches an existing
course (lecture/lab) and no prior meetings are necessary. |
|
3. Accessibility Responsibilities |
 |
a. Each teaching faculty member will schedule and maintain office hours
in appropriate locations (e.g., office, lab, studio). |
 |
b. At the beginning of each term, curriculum and literacy instructors
shall post the minimum thirty-hour professional commitment (including
the class schedule, locations, and office hours) at their worksite(s)
and with the division director. |
 |
c. At the beginning of each term, continuing education instructors
shall post the minimum forty-hour professional commitment (including the
class schedule, locations, and office hours) at their worksite(s) and
with the division director. |
 |
d. When the instructor cannot meet the scheduled hours, the instructor
should notify the division director or secretary as soon as possible and
post appropriate notice. |
 |
B. Directors in the Instructional Unit |
|
Directors in the Instructional Unit are administrators. Their standard
minimum full-time load is 40 hours per week. As a part of this work
load, curriculum division directors will teach a minimum of 6 load units
per fiscal year. These load units may be taught during any term, at the
individual division director's discretion. |
|
C. Other Exempt Personnel |
|
The standard minimum full-time load for other exempt personnel is 40
hours per week. Job responsibilities may require additional hours per
week. Exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay except as in
PPM 4.12 E. |
|
When special professional experience and/or expertise is required or
when scheduling demands, the assigned work day of an exempt employee may
be adjusted to include evening or weekend assignments and/or assignments
at other sites. However administrators will make every attempt to limit
assignments to five contiguous days except in extraordinary
circumstances. |
|
1.
Overload assignments for
additional pay are made by division directors and are based on
institutional need. An instructor may request and be granted such
assignments, subject to the approval of the instructor's division
director.
|
|
2. Any full-time employee may be given an opportunity to teach for
overload pay if the division director certifies that the employee is
qualified to teach in the subject area. If an assignment is made, the
division director/CCE director must consult with the employee's
supervisor for approval of the overload assignment. |
|
3. No full-time employee shall be paid for overload service unless the
extra teaching duties are performed in addition to the assigned
workload. |
