As winter weather approaches, it’s important for CPCC to keep employees and students informed regarding any closings or delays. In the event of inclement weather or other emergency situations, all members of the College are encouraged to watch CPCC TV, log on to the CPCC website, or call the new emergency information line at 704.330.6888 for up-to-date information.
Employees can also listen to area radio and television stations for announcements regarding the operation of the College; however, when there are numerous closings in the Charlotte area, it may take longer to get information about CPCC on these channels.
Please note, when the College closes, all classes at all campuses are canceled.
We continue to seek ways to provide safe campuses for our students and staff. With that in mind, the College has been working on several initiatives to strengthen security procedures. This month, please note that the security dispatch booth currently located at the Student Parking Deck on Central Campus will move to the Facilities Services Center on 7th Street. This will allow our dispatch to provide services to those who call with security issues and to monitor the surveillance cameras on the campus.
Students and staff are encouraged to use the current emergency call boxes located around the campus at the Student Parking Decks, elevators, and in select locations such as Central High building and Giles building to inform security of any emergencies.
Students and staff are also encouraged to contact CPCC security officers on campus regarding any emergency situations. Additional security officers will be available on campus to assist you.
During the spring 2008 semester, CPCC will be adding call boxes on all six campuses with alert systems. The new call boxes will enable CPCC security to alert students and staff with a siren indicating the need to remain within a building. The new call boxes are scheduled to be installed on all campuses by the end of the spring semester.
As always, we encourage you to partner with our security staff in our effort to keep our campuses safe. If you see any suspicious behavior or become aware of an emergency situation, contact CPCC security at 6911 (from a campus phone) or 704.330.6911. To obtain emergency notification information or campus closing information, call 704.330.6888.
For more information on what to do in an emergency, go to http://cpcc.edu/emergency-services.
Thanks for your support as we strive to keep our campuses safe throughout the year.
Beginning January 1, 2008, the standard mileage rate for local travel will be 50.5 cents.

Please contact Accounts Payable at 6772 for answers to your questions.
§ Employees who are claiming “Exempt” tax status must file a new W-4 form for 2008 in order to maintain exempt status. IRS guidelines require employers to change the status to “Single” with zero (0) dependents if a new form is not submitted for the new tax year, so please be sure to complete a new form by February 15, 2008.
Employees who meet IRS guidelines may claim exemption from income tax withholding. Information on claiming exemption from withholding can be found on the tax forms. The W-4 form is available on the Payroll website under “Forms” or you can go to http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf to print and fill out the form, and send it directly to the Payroll Department.
§ Employees who receive advance “Earned Income Credit” need to file a new W-5 form for 2008 if you want to continue receiving the credit on an advance basis. The form submitted for 2007 expires on December 31, 2007, so if you are eligible to claim the credit during 2008, a new W-5 form must be submitted by January 4, 2008. Otherwise, we are required to withhold at “Single” with no exemptions beginning with the first payment of 2008.
The W-5 form is available on the Payroll website under “Forms” or you can go to http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw5.pdf to print and fill out the form, and send it directly to the Payroll Department.
The Marketing Services Department has developed a new web page that highlights recent news coverage of the College.
If you see a recent news story not posted on this page, contact Jerri Haigler at 6660 or email jerri.haigler@cpcc.edu.
Are you ready to show off? Outreach and Recruitment would like to invite your department to join us for Open House. This event will target prospective students who have an interest in CPCC. Last year we had over 400 people attend. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to show off your student service or academic program through information tables. Our event will be held at Central Campus in the IT Building on Tuesday, February 19, from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
If you are interested in having your own table, please contact Julie Grahl via email or 6223 by February 1.
In November,
Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve System, spoke at the
Charlotte Chamber's Annual Meeting. During his presentation, he discussed the importance of community colleges and the value of the
N.C. Community College System.
Below is the excerpt referencing the community college system.
The average community college student in the state is 30 years old and likely working while attending school (North Carolina Community College System, 2006). Because they offer education closely tailored to employer demands in the local workplace, community colleges in North Carolina, as elsewhere, play an essential role in training and retraining workers.
Moreover, they do so at a relatively low cost. In general, we must move beyond the view that education is something that takes place only in K-through-12 schools and four-year colleges, as important as those are. Education and skills must be provided flexibly and to people of any age.
Occupational Health and Safety has partnered with Charlotte Radiology Breast Center to encourage all female employees to get annual screening mammograms. Appointments have been reserved on Monday, January 7, at the Morehead Medical Plaza breast center and on Wednesday, January 9, at the Randolph Road breast center. Digital mammography is now offered at each of their locations.
Please check with your insurance for eligibility and schedule your appointment by calling 704.367.2232.

La Boheme is coming to Halton Theater January 18-20. This most popular and beloved opera about young Parisian artists’ passionate lives will be fully staged with orchestra, and sung in Italian with supertitles.

Just as tenor Placido Domingo went from the performing stage to the conductor’s podium, Craig Estep, local tenor extraordinaire, will be conducting these performances of La Boheme. No stranger to the CPCC Opera stage, Maestro Estep performed the role of Alfred in last season’s acclaimed production of Die Fledermaus at CPCC. This season, CPCC welcomes him as the conductor of La Boheme.
The cast features some of the area’s brightest vocal stars including Juan Cajero as Rodolfo and Elizabeth Lawson as Mimi as well as Paolo Pacheco and Jennifer Ferreira. La Boheme performances are January 18 and 19 at 8:00 p.m. and January 20 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 704.330.6534 or by going online.
For more information, call 6571.

To Barbara Truesdale and the Classified Staff Sponsorship Committee from Robin Hunter, Transport Systems Technology:
“Thank you all for thinking of me and my family for the holidays. I am overwhelmed and grateful for your generosity. My family and I will enjoy the meals that we prepare with the food you provided. They will be even more special because of the love and caring that they represent.
"I have always been proud to work at CPCC with people who are more like family than co-workers. I was happy to see friends that I have known and admired for years bring me this special holiday gift. It’s hard to find the correct words to express how I am feeling right now but I hope you understand how much this means to me.
“Please let everyone know how thankful I am for your wonderful gift.
“Enjoy the break and the time spent with your families. I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
