Timesheets deadline
June 3

Due to year-end processing for payroll during the month of June, our normal processing time is greatly reduced.

We are requesting that all full-time employees make every effort to submit full-time timesheets for May to Human Resources no later than June 3, 2008. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

As always, timesheets may be scanned to Linda Anderson or faxed to 6066, if it is not possible to have them dropped off or mailed to Human Resources by the deadline. It is not necessary to send originals if you choose to scan or fax timesheets.

Budget Prep 2008-09

The Colleague Budget Module is open and ready for input of state and institutional budgets for fiscal year 2009.

For hands-on assistance with loading your state and/or institutional budget for your areas of responsibility, you are welcome to attend a Budget Prep Work Session at Harris Conference Center at Harris Campus in Room #2121. You can sign up for these help sessions (scheduled for weekdays only through May 15, 2008) via LearnerWeb under the event title of “State/Institutional Budget Prep FY09 Work Session.” Since these work sessions do not qualify as training, attendance at these sessions will no longer enable you to earn Professional Development hours; however, enrollment is still highly encouraged for planning purposes.

Budget staff will be stationed at HCC 2121 through May 15, 2008 (weekdays only) in the mornings from 8:30 to 11:30 and afternoons from 1:00 to 3:30. Again, if you wish to attend one of these work sessions, please enroll via LearnerWeb.

If you need assistance outside of the scheduled work sessions, please email Budget staff and someone will get with you as quickly as possible.

Employee Health and Fitness Day
May 15

Do you want to… Have fun? Participate in over 10 health and fitness activities? Obtain health-related information? Enjoy nutritious snacks? Wear comfortable attire? Show your CPCC spirit?

If you answered YES to any of these questions and want to earn PD credit, please participate for at least one hour at the Employee Health and Fitness Day next week Thursday, May 15, from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Follow these six easy steps to make the most of your experience at the EHF Day:

  1. Download the official EHF Itinerary Map  listing the location and times of the events, games, fitness activities, exhibitors, and educational health programs from the Be Well website today!
  2. Register on LearnerWeb.
  3. Earn one-hour PD credit by participating in one of the fitness activities, interacting with exhibitors, and then completing the event survey.
  4. Partake in the EHF Day group photo at 12:50.
  5. Wear your Spirit t-shirt.
  6. Bring your lunch and co-workers.

At the event, sign-in at the EHF Day registration tent to obtain an official EHF Day itinerary map and survey. After participating in the events, take the fast and easy EHF Day survey. Then return the survey to the EHF Day registration tent to receive PD credit and automatically be registered to win one of the six fabulous door prizes.

If you cannot attend, participate in one of the mini-health and fitness events at the area campuses during the week of May 19.

To make this employee event a success, volunteers are needed to assist at the registration table, at the snack tables, or at the fitness events.

Please consider volunteering for one hour from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 12:00-1:00 p.m. and then contact Libby Vagnoni (4273).

Internal & External Position(s)

Festival Coordinator, #3CENTDN-FEP-1. REQ. #305. This position is available in the Arts and Communications Division located on Central Campus. The festival coordinator coordinates various aspects of planning, presenting and supporting an annual multi-faced celebration of literature, art, music, film and culture at CPCC. Requires knowledge of standard procedures in a field requiring comprehensive training typically acquired through attainment of a bachelor’s degree in arts, communication, event planning or related filed; one (1) year of directly related experience. Excellent written and oral communication skills; listening and questioning skills; ability to make presentations; excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and/or project are essential. Closing Date: May 20, 2008.

Program Developer, Institute for Entrepreneurship, #3SMBUSN-FEP-2. REQ. #308. (2 positions). Positions available in Institute for Entrepreneurship located on Central Campus. The Institute for Entrepreneurship is a continuing education program dedicated to supporting hopeful entrepreneurs and existing small business owners in the Charlotte region. Annually it serves over 2,000 individuals through classes, seminars, one-one-one counseling, and its onsite Resource Center. The program developer plans and organized the program offerings for small business owners and entrepreneurs. Responsibilities include hiring and evaluation of instructors; set up and completion of classes and required documentation; event planning and coordination of entrepreneurial activities with other program areas of CCE and CPCC, resources providers, and partner organizations; working closely with institute team and the colleges marketing department to plan and implement marketing strategies, including website content and maintenance; client intake counseling to ensure appropriate guidance and referrals; active participation with IE team to set and meet action plans and goals to contribute to the achievement of overall CCE/CPCC goals. Requires broad knowledge of basic theories and principles, concepts and methodology of a specific professional discipline related to the appropriate program area. Associate’s degree and two years of responsible administrative experience required. Bachelor’s degree and experience preferred. Strong computer applications skills and website experience; demonstrated strength in written and communication skills; organizational skills; interpersonal skills; and willingness to engage in teamwork. Successful candidate will show enthusiasm for customer service and demonstrate ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks while meeting objectives in a fast-paced environment. Closing Date: May 21, 2008.

(Position #328) Instructor – Adult ESL (Closing Date: 5/20/08) position is available in the Community Development Division to teach Adult ESL, ABE and GED classes. This position will teach in one of the Adult ESL Self-Access Language learning labs or classes as assigned. Morning/evening work schedule required. Requires a bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in a related field; and experience teaching English as a second language to adult students in a computer assisted language learning environment. Ability to work morning/evening work schedule as required preferred. Previous teaching experience preferred.

(Position #315) Instructor – Advertising and Graphic Design (Closing Date: 5/15/08) position available in the Technical Careers Division. Requires an associate’s Degree from an accredited institution in graphic design or a directly related field; and two (2) years of progressive experience working in the design and advertising industry. Proficiency in Mac-based work environment and be familiar with current design-related software including: Adobe CS (PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dream Weaver, Flash and Acrobat) a must. Proficiency in Microsoft Office preferred.

(Position #334) Instructor – Chemistry (Closing Date: 5/20/08) position available in the Sciences Division. Candidates will be expected to help expand the division's ability to offer chemistry learning opportunities to our students. Sciences has a large student population and we offer excellent learning opportunities in astronomy, biology, chemistry, geography, geology and physics. Come work with us to help expand the boundaries of scientific literacy! Requires a master’s degree from an accredited institution in chemistry or master's degree from an accredited institution and at least 18 graduate semester hours in chemistry.

(Position #322) Instructor – Civil Engineering Technology (Closing Date: 5/15/08) position available in the Engineering Technologies Division. Candidates are expected to develop and maintain a nationally recognized ABET accredited education program to participate in collaborative interdisciplinary development and teach civil engineering technology courses. Requires a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited institution. Teaching and industry experience preferred.

(Position #327) Instructor – Construction Management (Closing Date: 5/15/08) position available in the Construction Technologies Division. The Construction Management Degree is part of the O.P. & W.T. Crowder Construction Institute that also offers innovative and exciting degrees in electrical/electronics, air-conditioning, heating and refrigeration, as well as classes in carpentry, masonry, general contracting, blueprint reading, home inspection, home improvement, construction safety and apprenticeship training in both electrical and plumbing. Requires an associate’s degree from an accredited institution in construction management or a closely related field; and a minimum of two (2) years of progressive industry experience to include knowledge of: blueprint reading and estimating, planning and scheduling, construction management and general contracting. Preferred: strong written and verbal communication skills; PC literacy; enjoyment working with a diverse group of students.

(Position #333) Instructor – Early Childhood Education (Closing Date: 5/20/08) position available in the Nursing, Human Services and Early Childhood Education Division. The Early Childhood Program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Requires a master’s degree from an accredited institution and a minimum of at least 18 graduate semester hours in early childhood education or child development. Community college teaching, curriculum development, administration and supervision experience in early childhood program preferred.

(Position #332) Instructor – English (Closing Date: 5/20/08) position available in the English, Reading and Humanities Division. This is one of the College's largest divisions. The division employs 28 full-time instructors and over 100 part-time instructors. Each semester the division runs more than 350 courses and serves more than 7,000 students on seven campuses (including the virtual campus). This position will teach primarily English composition. The division offers college-level courses that include English composition and literature, humanities, journalism, philosophy and religion; as well as developmental courses in English and reading. All courses are either totally online, or have online components in either Blackboard or Moodle. Learning communities for both college-level and developmental students are offered. Requires a master’s degree from an accredited institution with at least 18 graduate semester hours in English. Candidates must have ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends at multiple campuses.

(Position #326) Instructor – German (Closing Date: 5/15/08) position is available in the Foreign Languages and Academic ESL Division. The mission of this division is to design and implement programs leading to the development of language skills and to provide an understanding of foreign cultures through the study of language, culture and literature. Our purpose is to help individuals gain proficiency in a foreign language for personal growth or to explore career opportunities in areas such as education, business, government, industry, the military, nursing and social work. Requires native/near native fluency in German and English; and a master’s Degree from an accredited institution with at least 18 graduate semester hours in German. This position may be required to teach day and evening elementary and intermediate German curriculum classes at any CPCC location. Ability to teach English as a second language and at least 2 years of teaching experience at the college level preferred. Training and experience teaching academic ESL preferred.

(Position #316) Instructor – History (Closing Date: 5/15/08) position available in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Division. This division brings together faculty and students studying anthropology, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. We are large enough to protect disciplinary integrity, and collaborate enough to offer intriguing synthesis. The history faculty is involved in projects as varied as: "The Trail of History" television series, Historic Rosedale Plantation, Charlotte Museum of History, the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, and many short-term activities. Requires a master’s degree from an accredited institution to include at least 18 graduate semester hours in history. Expertise in teaching required, with community college teaching preferred. Experience developing and offering courses online or through distance learning technologies is a plus.

(Position #320) Instructor – Human Resources Management (Closing Date: 5/20/08) position available in the Business and Accounting Division to teach in the broad HRM area to include: Recruitment and Selection, Intro to HRM, Intro to Business, Compensation, and Training and Development. Other responsibilities include program expansion and student advisement. Requires a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in human resource management or business administration with a concentration in human resources and two (2) years work experience in human resources. Preferred qualifications include teaching experience at post-secondary level; professional education or training in human resource management; experience on-line teaching preferred; and strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills.

(Position #331) Instructor – Information Technology (Closing Date: 5/20/08) position available in Information Technology Division. The Information Technology Division offers seven programs to provide clients with graduates who possess skills and knowledge required to lead the marketplace. This instructor position requires innovation, creative ideas and the attitude to lead students in the basics of the IT field. Setting the proper foundation is a prerequisite to our student's future success; being a part of that success is an added benefit for our instructors. Requires a master's degree in information technology from an accredited institution; or a master's degree from an accredited institution with at least 18 graduate hours of Information Technology courses. Candidates should have a commitment to teaching excellence leading to student success in a learning-centered environment; proven leadership, management and inter-personal skills; and a personal desire to teach in more than one IT program.

(Position #321) Instructor – Information Technology (Programming) (Closing Date: 5/15/08) position available in the Information Technologies Division. Candidates must be committed to teaching excellence, leading to student success in a learning centered environment and have desire to teach in more than one IT program. The Information Technology Division offers seven programs to provide clients with graduates who possess skills and knowledge required to lead the marketplace. We're interested in you if you can assist this leadership team in the area of simulation, animation and gaming. Are you a gamer? Requires an associate’s degree in computer science or a related discipline from an accredited institution; and 2 years of full-time work experience in information technology (or part-time equivalent). Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, relevant industry certifications, and possession of the following skills: understanding principles of object-oriented programming: proficient on C#, C++, or scripting languages; proficient on XNA Framework; familiar with a 3D modeling tool (3ds Max, Maya); solid background in math, physics.

(Position #335) Instructor – Interpreter Education/ASL (Closing Date: 5/20/08) position available in the Professional Careers Division. The Professional Careers Division is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of students while providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to serve the surrounding professional communities. We are one of the leading providers of interpreter education and training for current and future interpreters. Requires a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education and interpreting, deaf studies, or ASL interpreting; and RID certification and ASLTA certification. Candidates should have ability to develop and offer courses through a variety of learning management systems; excellent interpersonal communication skills (both verbal and written); and knowledge of personal computer software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Microsoft products.

(Position #324) Instructor – Mathematics (2 positions available) (Closing Date: 5/15/08) position available in the Mathematics Division to teach developmental and college transfer courses. Schedule may include travel to several campuses. The Mathematics Division consists of 24 full-time instructors and over 50 part-time instructors. Each semester the Division serves more than 6,000 students on six campuses. Our courses include all levels of developmental mathematics, AAS degree courses, as well as college transfer courses from entry level through differential equations. We are active participants in the American Mathematics Association for Two Year Colleges (AMATYC), in the state affiliate (NCMATYC), and in the North Carolina Association of Developmental Education (NCADE). The division encourages and supports professional development of our faculty. Requires a master's degree in mathematics from an accredited institution; or a master's degree in any discipline from an accredited institution and minimum of eighteen (18) graduate hours in mathematics. Previous teaching experience preferred.

(Position #323) Instructor – Medical Assisting (Closing Date: 5/15/08)position is available in the Health Sciences Division. This position conducts classes and performs duties related to instruction, advises students with matters outside the classroom and participates in activities that enhance the college's service to students and the community. Teaches administrative and clinical courses in traditional and on-line formats and travels for clinical supervision. Requires an associate’s degree from an accredited institution in a healthcare discipline (or a diploma in medical assisting with minimum of associate’s degree in a field that will complement program needs); and current CMA certification plus minimum of 3 years work experience in a physician’s office or ambulatory care center. Prefer minimum of two (2) years experience in clinical and/or classroom instruction; and documented coursework (college courses, seminars, or in-services) on topics such as learning theory, curriculum design, test construction, teaching methodology, or assessment techniques.

(Position #232) Instructor – Physics (Closing Date: 5/15/08)will be expected to teach conceptual physics, algebra-based physics and calculus-based physics. Teaching assignments will likely include multiple campuses, multiple courses and both day and evening classes. If interested, the successful candidate for this position will also have the opportunity to teach classes and labs in astronomy. Requires a master's degree in physics from an accredited institution, or a master's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in physics. Assignment includes teaching at various campus locations of the College, day and evening classes/labs.

(Position #317) Instructor – Psychology (Closing Date: 5/20/08)position available in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Division. The division brings together faculty and students studying anthropology, geography, history, political science, psychology and sociology. We are large enough to protect disciplinary integrity, and collaborative enough to offer intriguing synthesis. The psychology faculty serves more than 4,100 students a year through dynamic and innovative classroom teaching, and through student organizations such as the Sociology/Psychology Association and Psi Beta. Requires a master’s degree from an accredited institution to include a minimum of least 18 graduate semester hours in psychology. Expertise in teaching required, with community college teaching preferred.

(Position #330) Instructor – Surveying Technology (Closing Date: 5/20/08)position available in the Engineering Technologies Division. Candidates with teaching experience and bachelor's degree preferred. Candidates are expected to develop and maintain a nationally recognized ABET accredited education program to participate in collaborative interdisciplinary development and teach surveying technology courses. Engineering Technologies Division offers 10 different programs: Computer, Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Surveying, GIS, Integrated Systems, Machining, Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology. Division is vibrant, growing and creative, preparing students with skills and knowledge for current and future workplace. Requires an associate’s degree in applied sciences, civil engineering technology or surveying technology from an accredited institution; a valid professional land surveyor (PLS) license; and minimum of three (3) years of industry experience (or part-time equivalent). Candidates with teaching experience and bachelor's degree preferred.

Academic Advisor, #3ADLTBE-FEP-7, REQ. # 310. (INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY). The Academic Advisor position is available in Community Development located on Central Campus. Duties include conducting Basic Skills Orientations for new students, academic advising, compiling students records, submitting reports/grades, and communication with faculty. Requires broad knowledge of basic theories and principles, concepts, and methodology of a general professional field acquired through the attainment of a bachelor's degree in education or preferably in the areas of human/community services or counseling and one year of related experience. Candidate must have excellent inter-personal skills and a broad knowledge of the literacy programs: reporting, data collection, and testing. Day and evening hours required. Director, Library Services, #3LIBRSV-FEA-6, REQ. # 307. (INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY). The Director, Library Services, provides leadership and direction of the overall operations of Library Services to support teaching and learning at multiple physical campuses and distance-based education. The director assists the Dean for Library Services in formulating strategies to support curricular initiatives and information literacy. Master’s degree in library sciences from an ALA accredited college or university; and minimum of three (3) years of full-time work experience in an academic library; and minimum of three (3) years of full-time, progressively-increasing supervisory or administrative experience (or part-time equivalent) to include budgetary responsibilities. Biotechnology and life sciences: what’s in it for me?

Are you interested in learning more about the opportunities and impacts in the biotechnology and life science industries?

Find out how to benefit from the growth of the biotech and life sciences sectors in the Charlotte region on Wednesday, May 14, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. at Levine Campus. The program will include a presentation by the N.C. Community College System’s BioNetwork, tours of the mobile laboratory and the opportunity to talk with the experts.

The program is a “drop-in” so that visitors may come at any time from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and participate in the entire program. The event is sponsored by the Charlotte Region BioBusiness Service Hub.

Good ambassadors

§ The Board of Directors of the Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Charlotte (LACCC) recently elected Edith Valladares McElroy, Foreign Languages and Academic ESL, to serve as treasurer of the LACCC for the 2008/2009 fiscal year. McElroy has served as an LACC Board Member for two years, including service on the Events Committee and as chairperson of the Education Committee of the board.

McElroy also serves as chairperson of the Education Committee of the LACC Foundation, a nonprofit group which awards merit- and need-based scholarships to Latino college students.

An independent affiliate organization of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, LACCC serves the needs of the Latino-owned business community and Latino businesspeople. CPCC is an institutional member of the LACCC. Levine Campus Dean Augustine Martinez was the first CPCC representative on the LACCC Board, serving prior to McElroy’s appointment.

§ To Bjarne Nielsen, Academic ESL, from a student, presented as a TRiO Instructor Appreciation Award:

“I would like to take this chance to thank you for teaching me the English language. You are available all the time to answer my questions. You always help me to find a lot of information about CPCC….You come to class early every day so that I can ask you for help before class starts. I really appreciate everything you do for me and show me.

§ The Harris Conference Center welcomed the Emerging Payments group of Wachovia this week for a two-day training facilitated by Cap Gemini consultants.

§ Sarah Wilson, Career Services, has been appointed vice co-chair for the 2009 Conference for the N.C. Association of Colleges and Employers. This will be a joint conference with the N.C. and S.C. state organizations and will take place in Charleston in 2009. Last year, Sarah served on NCACE’s Executive Board as co-chair of the Newsletter Committee.

§ CPCC, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County, and Communities in Schools are working together to provide children in CMS Achievement Zone Schools with books. Studies have shown how important books in the home can be to improving reading skills and fostering a lifelong love of reading.

The Central Campus Majors Bookstore is currently offering a selection of recommended children’s books for the book drive. Many popular children’s books are available right now to donate! A collection bin for donations is available right next to the display of children’s books for easy drop-off. Please consider stopping by the bookstore before May 15 and contributing to the county’s efforts.

If you are interested in donating to the book drive, check a list of suggested titles. Most of these are available at the Majors Bookstore today!

Any donated materials can be dropped off at the bin in the bookstore or be sent to Jennifer Arnold, Central Campus Library, LR 406.

Win a Lexus in Foundation raffle

The CPCC Foundation has tickets for a Lexus Raffle at $200 per ticket. There is a 1-in-100 chance of winning the lease of a Lexus, top of the line LS 460 and service for one year from Hendrick Lexus. The winner will be announced at the Clay Pigeon Challenge Cup on May 16, 2008.

You do not need to be present to win. You can visit the Challenge Cup website for details and rules.

According to IRS regulations, the purchase of raffle tickets is not deductible as a charitable contribution.

Soccer team aiming for league championship

CPCC’s Soccer Club will play the Charlotte Wings Soccer Club on Sunday, May 11, at 3:00 p.m. in a Charlotte Premier Soccer League tournament semifinal game. Ramblewood Park Field #3 is the location. The teams have split their two most recent meetings with each claiming a 1-0 win.

The following is an excerpt from Jim Bailey's report on the team's first tournament win last week:

CPCC's Soccer Club made the most of its first ever appearance in the Charlotte Premier Soccer League tournament on May 4 by turning in one of its best performances of the year in a quarter-final match against Eire FC. The Tigers set a torrid pace at the outset, scoring three goals in the first sixteen minutes and playing shutout defense to stun the third seeded Eire FC by a final score of 5-1.

Jazz concert in Halton
May 8

The annual Billy Spencer Memorial Jazz Concert will be on Thursday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Halton Theater.

The CPCC Jazz Band under the direction of Bill Hanna and the Charlotte Jazz Orchestra will be performing. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and seniors.

Billy was a gifted musician and devoted member of the CPCC Jazz Band. CPCC students, faculty and staff were impressed not only with his talent but also his perseverance while confronted with health challenges.

He died of kidney disease in 2003 at the age of 40.

State Health Plan recruiting walkers for wellness

To CPCC employees from George Stokes, executive administrator, N.C. State Health Plan:

On behalf of the N.C. State Health Plan, I would like to invite you to join me in the Million Step March, a 600-mile statewide wellness campaign sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of N.C. to promote the benefits of physical activity.

The 10-week campaign and walk across the state began on April 1 in Asheville and will end in mid-June in Wilmington. The initiative encourages you and your family, as well as your employees, to take the first step to a longer, healthier life by making a commitment to walking for 30 minutes each day.

I encourage you to take time to learn more about the Million Step March and how you can participate. Visit the Web site, which provides the registration details you’ll need to participate. Above all, please take the time to register for the campaign. Consider organizing a group of employees to participate in the Million Step March as it makes its way across the state.

Just by registering and logging your steps your name will be entered to win free prizes.

I look forward to walking in Wilmington in June and welcome you as walking partners for the conclusion of the Million Step March. (To celebrate the Million Step March in Wilmington, please check the Web site closer to the event for details.)

I commend Blue Cross and Blue Shield of N.C. for implementing this excellent program for N.C. and strongly encourage all State Health Plan members, along with their families, to participate as we continue our commitment to healthy living.
