Telephone system upgrade May 16-17

The College telephone system is being upgraded this weekend, May 16-17. The main upgrade process will take place between 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2008, and 1:00 a.m. the next morning. Telephone services may be interrupted or become unavailable during this time.

This upgrade should not affect the Automated Attendant, the Call Center, Voice Mail or any other system functionality. Vendor personnel will be available to deal with any unforeseen issues early Monday morning.

Your cooperation and vigilance is key to the success of this project.

Please contact the Help Desk at 5000 if you notice any abnormal telephone system behavior.

Library notes

§ Due to technical difficulties uploading Office 2007, the circulating laptops will NOT be available for checkout until early next week. We are working to correct this problem as soon as possible. Please accept our apology for any inconvenience this delay may cause. If you have any questions, please contact Marcia Addison at 6752.

§ A list of library materials acquired in April 2008 is online.

Introducing Excel 2007

When you open Excel 2007, you’ll see the familiar worksheets you’re accustomed to, but you’ll also see things that are new at the top of the window. The old look of Excel menus and buttons has been replaced with this new Ribbon, with tabs you click to get to commands.

With Excel 2007, instead of having 30 or so undisplayed toolbars and commands buried on menus, you have one control center—the Ribbon, which brings together the essentials and makes them very visual. Commands are organized in small related groups. For example, commands to edit cells are grouped together in the Editing group, and commands to work with cells are in the Cells group. When you try the new design, you’ll discover that the commands you already know how to use are grouped together in ways that make sense to you.

To view this entire Microsoft course, visit the MS training site.

For further information check out CPCC’s MS Office 2007 project page.

For support with this or any other IT service, contact the ITS Help Desk at 5000.

Service accolades

§ To Dr. Tony Zeiss from Roger Meyers, English, Reading, and Humanities:

“I write both as a staff member and a parent of CPCC students.

“Our staff is fantastic.

“This past semester, spring 2008, I had difficulties with the new computer programs. Any time I contacted ITS they responded quickly and resolved my problems. They were courteous, professional, and efficient.

“My younger daughter, Rachael, graduated from CPCC and went on to graduate from N.C. State, summa cum laude. She has stated that the faculty and support staff here at CPCC were more cooperative and approachable than at State.

“My older daughter, Ruth/Mayim, has attended four colleges. She echoes her younger sister's remarks about staff being approachable and of great assistance.

“We have a caring staff.”

§
To the editor from Marielena Hange, Counseling and Advisement:

“On behalf of Counseling and Advisement, I’d like to thank the following presenters at our Health Science Information Session which took place on Wednesday, May 7, and Thursday, May 8, 2008. Thank you so much for taking the time from your very busy schedule to present valuable information about your program of study. Those who attended were grateful for the opportunity to meet you and to receive the timely handouts you provided.

“I would like to thank Deborah Adams and Tonia Branch for preparing the Health Science binders. I would also like to thank Rita Dawkins, Mandy Saunders, Tony Jones and Percell Hobbs for their assistance and support.”

Thank you from Joyce King

CPCC Family, your acts of kindness expressed during the home-going of my father will always be appreciated. Thank you for taking time from your day to make a telephone call, send flowers, a sympathy card, and/or to just inquire about my family. It is comforting to know that I work with such thoughtful people. God Bless.
—Joyce King
