Fiscal year end and GL adjusting entries

The fiscal year 2008 ended on June 30, 2008, and we are now operating in the new fiscal year, 2009. Effective immediately, there should be no further processing or journal entries affecting the previous fiscal year of 2008.

If you think you have need of further adjustment of 2008 general ledger balances via a journal entry, please prepare the journal entry in proper form by following the CPCC journal entry procedure as documented on the Finance & G/L Systems intranet site, and send all such journal entry requests to the Finance & G/L Systems department for consideration and input into the Colleague system.

Account managers, please note: opening balances will not roll forward into the new fiscal year 2009 until the closing process has been completed. We estimate the closing process will take place around the week ending September 26, 2008. Until then, you can review your Estimated Opening Balance by using the GLTB or AHST screens.

Fireworks on Central Campus
July 4

CPCC is partnering with Center City Partners for the July 4 fireworks in Charlotte. The fireworks will begin around 9:30 p.m. on July 4. In addition, US Airways will be presenting Family Fun Fest at Memorial Stadium along with WLYT and WKKT radio stations. Family-friendly activities will run from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

CPCC employees are encouraged to use the Facilities Services parking lot for great visibility of the fireworks. Please note that the entire Central Campus will be blocked off for this event; therefore, employees will not have access to buildings or the Central Campus on July 4.

CPCC is closed on July 4 for the holiday.

Peak registration volunteers, thank you

We continue to look for ways to celebrate employees who volunteer to assist during peak registration times of the year. One idea we are implementing this year is selecting a volunteer name from each peak registration period and providing the person with a gift card.

Our last peak registration day was May 1 and there were approximately 25 volunteers, and our winning volunteer is Betty Granger. Congratulations, Betty!

If you are interested in volunteering for peak registration, please contact Carolyn Stafford or 6458 or JJ McEachern or 6395. The days are as follows:

Peak registration days:

Pension fund report

Letter to employees from State Treasurer Moore

Members & Retirees of the N.C. Retirement Systems:

An advertisement about our pension fund ran in today’s News & Observer [June 24], and I wanted to give you the facts directly. While it has not been immune to the economic downturn, North Carolina’s pension fund is performing better than its peers. Our conservative investment strategy is protecting your benefits, even during this difficult period.

The first quarter of 2008 was turbulent for investors of all sizes, and especially for the stock market. For example the S&P 500, a bellwether for stock market performance, lost 9.5% that quarter, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 1,000 points.

Fortunately, our investment strategy is focused on long-term performance and is actually structured to perform better in market downturns to protect your benefits. Our high allocation to quality bonds provides stability, and our diverse investments reduce risk overall. This conservative strategy and careful management have made North Carolina’s pension fund one of the best in the nation for six years running.

Although North Carolina’s returns were impacted by market conditions, the fund fared better than most of its peers. North Carolina’s returns beat the median pension fund returns for both the quarter and the year as of March 31, according to Wilshire, the most widely accepted benchmark for the performance of pension funds. North Carolina’s performance for the quarter was better than many other public pension funds, including The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) and the New York State Common Retirement Fund.

In fact, our pension fund has already experienced a modest recovery. For the three months ending April 30, the equity portfolio returned to posting gains, and the overall fund performance is holding steady. Know that we will continue to carefully manage the pension fund to protect your savings – in any market.

It is an honor to serve as your State Treasurer.
Sincerely, Richard H. Moore

How to stay in shape this summer

Below is some advice (in the form of suggestions from your CPCC colleagues) on how to stay motivated to exercise this summer. Enjoy better health! The list below is included as the last page of this week’s PDF edition.

  1. Walk on the treadmills at Central or Levine Fitness Centers or walk inside your building—each campus has a designated indoor and outdoor “1” Mile walking trail.
  2. Exercise at your desk. These short breaks can be easily performed at your desk area to increase flexibility and motion, and reduce tension.
  3. Walk around your house/kitchen several times before reaching for a snack. Short, 3-5 minute walks produce the same benefits as a 30-minute walk.
  4. Walk with a buddy or group. Try to exercise/walk at the same time each day; that way it becomes part of your daily routine.
  5. Drink plenty of water/sports drinks, both before, during and after exercising to avoid dehydration during summer heat.
  6. Exercise first thing in the morning before the heat starts; get up early enough to walk before coming to work or walk later in the evening. You can hear the birds, smell the flowers, and visit with neighbors.
  7. Start a lifetime goal of achieving good health and fitness. As long as you stay active, you are motivated to exercise and eat healthier.
  8. Schedule a time to exercise; make it an important task in your daily routine!
  9. Start your day 30 minutes earlier and exercise early. It’s OK because you can also end your day 30 minutes sooner—it all averages out! Plus exercising early in the day will speed up your metabolism for the entire day.
  10. Jump rope for five minutes, it produces the same cardiovascular fitness as cycling one mile, swimming six minutes, jogging 15 minutes or playing a nine-hole golf course.
  11. Warm weather also means more yard work and this qualifies as exercise, too! Beat the heat and do your mowing, trimming, gardening in the evening.
  12. Make "To do" lists, and include "go to gym," "take a walk," or "do exercises."
  13. Find a cool walking place: walk at your campus, walk at the mall on the weekends (then reward yourself and shop when you’re done!), or walk on vacation at the beach and enjoy the breeze.
  14. Work-out at home on a stationary bike or use weights for strength training.
  15. Park your car at the back of the parking lot; walk up to the building and during the day walk to the bathroom on a different floor. It’s not much but you’d be surprised at how many calories you can burn if you look for simple ways to increase your daily activities.
  16. If it’s raining out, just climb the stairs for 20 minutes at a good pace.
  17. Exercise videos/CDs are great and you can target your specific needs. In fact the campus libraries all carry an array of exercise and fitness videos/CDs. Go online to CPCC Libraries or contact your local librarian.

Bottom line, exercising and getting in shape are both lifestyle changes and nothing temporary. In this way, you can enjoy a celebration and if you gain a little weight, so what! As long as your indulgences are only 5% of your lifestyle and not 95%, you’ll be fine.

Celebrations are part of life and exercise should be also. Find what works best for you and incorporate some form of exercise into your daily routine.

To the editor from Lynne Kilgore, Marketing Services:

“Kudos to Mike Hinson [ITS information systems analyst]! Mike is the unsung hero at this college. Every time I need data he’s there for me.
