Timeline for fall LMS

As fall semester gets underway, please review the timeline and special dates for the activities which involve the Learning Management Systems.

The course copy and special enrollments features will become unavailable to instructors at 11:59 p.m. on August 15, 2008, and will be turned back on at 12:00 a.m. August 25, 2008. During this time, program chairs or instructors will need to contact the ITS Help Desk to seek assistance with these features.

For assistance with this or any other technology-related services, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 5000 or helpdesk@cpcc.edu

ITS support for instructors and students

§ The College has launched a new syllabi system to assist instructors in establishing course expectations with their students. The new system can be accessed from the Course Administration Web Tools (CAW).

Once logged into the system, instructors can use the “How to Tutorials” located on the right hand side.

Students will be able to access their course syllabi through the “My Courses” tab located within the College portal. For assistance with this or any other technology related services, please contact the ITS Help Desk.

§ For your convenience, Information Technology Services provides a Customer Service Desk or 704.330.5000 as a single point of contact for requesting technical assistance Our technology support services range from your offices to the classrooms and virtually everything in between.

A short list of services has been included below. For a complete listing, please visit our Services Catalog.

§ Smart Classrooms are specially equipped rooms which enable faculty and staff to incorporate multimedia and internet content into their lectures. Each Smart Classroom has a smart podium outfitted with a network computer, DVD /VCR player, ceiling mounted data projector, and in some cases an interactive writing monitor. For a listing of Smart Classrooms by campus and directions on how to schedule a Smart Classroom, please visit the Smart Classroom Support Site.

Please visit our online tutorials to help familiarize yourself with the Smart Podium and ProMax Monitor. For assistance with this or any other technology services, please contact our ITS Help Desk at 704.330.5000.

§ Students will experience a more useful and usable Student Portal (my.cpcc.edu) this fall. As part of an ongoing partnership with Google, our aging portal infrastructure will be updated with cutting edge technology.

While these changes will result in a different overall (and we hope greatly improved) user experience, every effort has been made to ensure that all previously existing functionality has been retained. This primarily includes the "My Courses" channel, which displays each student's personalized class schedule (including links to LMS systems, syllabi, and instructor information), as well as College events and email notifications.

In addition to the existing services, several new features will be introduced via the new platform, including "To do" lists, personalized calendar, online documents, and more. The new calendar feature will automatically populate student class schedules. As we grow the services offered through this platform, we will be partnering with areas at the College to produce topical content that students can add to their portal, increasing its relevance and value. We look forward to working with you, and wish you luck in engaging your students this coming year.

If you have any questions regarding this new system please contact the ITS Helpdesk at 5000.

Financial planning resources online

Title V of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACT Act) established the Financial Literacy and Education Commission with the purpose of improving the financial literacy and education of persons in the United States. To reach the widest number of people possible, the commission established a website and a toll-free telephone number (1-888-MYMONEY) to coordinate the presentation of educational materials from across the spectrum of federal agencies that deal with financial issues and markets.

A link to the commission’s website is on the HR website in the Benefits/Retirement and Financial Planning Section.

LR404 converted to classroom

Due to the increasing strains on classroom space at the Central Campus as a result of various construction/renovation projects, Learning Resource Center, Room 404, has been temporarily converted into a classroom.

If you were planning to schedule this room for meetings or conferences, please make note of this change.

You will be informed through the Communicator once this room has been converted back into a meeting space.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this change, please contact Eric Jensen at 704.330.6344. Thank you for your cooperation.

Good ambassadors

§ To the Transfer Resource Center from a student:

“I've been a student at CPCC for a little over five years (mostly at the Levine Campus), and now I'm in the process of transferring to UNC Charlotte. I just wanted to point out what a great job Ellen Scott is doing, and how helpful she has been in making this possible for me. She has an outstanding attitude and work ethic, and I greatly appreciate it.”

The Harris Conference Center recently hosted Global Knowledge for PMP certification training. Global Knowledge is the worldwide leader in IT and business training. They deliver via training centers, private facilities, and the Internet, enabling their customers to choose when, where, and how they want to receive training programs and learning services. Since 2006, Global Knowledge has held 19 training courses at the Harris Conference Center.

§ Katharina Struessmann from Oerlinghausen (near Cologne), Germany, might be one of your new students this semester. We have been participating in student exchanges with the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program for about 15 years and we are always so enriched by the experience.

Katharina will attend classes in business, marketing, American history and Spanish during her first semester. Second semester will be a work experience in the community. She looks forward to meeting her USA classmates and making new friends at CPCC. She has the good fortune of being home-hosted by a CPCC family, Chris Jolly (Cardiovascular Technology), his wife, and their two daughters. Thank you, Jolly family!

CPCC also has the opportunity to invite our own students to apply for a similar scholarship to Germany next year. Please contact Donna Apgar for more information about this possibility.

Counselors help with loss and grief

Very recently, an esteemed member of our CPCC faculty passed away, causing initial shock and overall sorrowfulness in many colleagues and students.

The office of Counseling Services is glad to aid students who are despairing. Counseling Services wants to also remind the College community that counselors are available to help students who are experiencing grief.

If you happen to know of a student with similar struggles, please encourage him or her to visit our offices at the most convenient campus.

Service accolades

§ To Larry Fisher and others in Facilities Services from Jay Potter, Harper Campus:

“Once again let me thank you and your entire team for your hard work in getting power restored to the campus this weekend. All is well this morning—and stress levels are back to normal!”

Larry Fisher’s message sent Saturday morning, August 16:

“We have just completed the replacement installation of the damaged transformer at Harper Campus. This was CPCC’s 112.5 KVA transformer that was damaged from the Duke Power 1000 KVA transformer failure on Thursday-Friday. I was very lucky that I found a replacement transformer here locally. It was not an exact replacement but was one that I was able to use as a replacement with some minor changes and adjustments. The Harper Campus should be back up to full capacity now. If someone should notice any other potential problem areas, please do not hesitate to contact me. I appreciate everyone’s patience during these repairs.”

§ To the editor from Regan Hodges, Harris Conference Center:

“Many thanks to Lyvio Faustin for his assistance in software loaded on our lab computers for a group scheduled to meet at the HCC. I appreciate his help on such short notice and he went above and beyond to help me prepare for a group’s last minute need.”

§ To the editor from Bill Dillon, associate dean, Harris Campus:

“Last Saturday evening I was driving my old project car, and it broke down right at the busy intersection of Providence Road and Highway 51. Fortunately, three CPCC students drove up, got out of their car, blocked traffic and pushed my car safely to a parking lot. They did not know I was also from CPCC until I told them but they were so obviously proud to be CPCC students, and I am very proud to have [them] at CPCC. I don’t know their names but I want to thank them.”

Thank you from Richard Cook

I would like to take the time to thank two ladies who have helped me through the retirement paper maze. In our Human Resources department, Joanette West has had the patience of a saint, in dealing with me and my many questions, and last minute requests. In our Payroll department, Melissa Stewart has likewise always answered my questions, and gone out of her way to get needed paperwork to me on time. These two ladies were always there with a smile, and the answers, and are a great compliment to our CPCC family. Thanks again,
—Richard Cook

Friendship Trays volunteers

For many years a number of CPCC employees have delivered Friendship Trays to an eastside apartment location on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. It takes about an hour from Central Campus to pick up the trays on Distribution Street (off South Boulevard), deliver them and return to campus. Usually a volunteer has to deliver only once or twice a month, and it is easy to exchange with someone if an emergency comes up. The Thursday group particularly needs a few new volunteers. If you can help, please call Mitchell Hagler, 6576. This is a great way to give back to the community.
